Cooperative Learning:
Select one of the following themes and in another paragraph or two state why your selection best fits this play:
The major themes of Othello are:
- appearance and reality,
- society's treatment of the outsider; and
- jealousy
I choose theme 3 jealousy. This theme relates to Othello in various ways. One character in this play named Iago faces jealousy in almost the whole play. Iago is a solider that follows the commands of Othello. However another soldier named Michael Cassio was at a higher position in being a soldier. Iago tried many evil plans into getting rid of Cassio because he wanted to be at a higher position.
One evil plan that Iago used against Cassio is getting him drunk and telling Roderigo to fight with him so that Othello will become angry with him and also this will hurt Cassio's reputation. This part is present in Act II, Scene I. Roderigo also faces jealousy in Othello. He is jealous of Othello. Roderigo is a secrete lover of Desdemona. He wants to marry Desdemona.
