Do Now 12- 1-2, 2008

Objectives: based on chapters 6 and 7 where Dorian tells Lord Henry and Basil about his engagement to Sibyl Vane and he also invites them to see her performance in the theatre in Romeo and Juliet.

Aim: How important is Wilde's credo "Art for Art sake" in Chapter six and What is the difference between Love and infatuation?

Love is a pure feeling one has for someone else where infatuation is when some loves only what the person they love is made up of. What they might not really be from the true inside. They only like the effects on the person they love. This is infutation because if a person came in one day and acted totally different from who they usually are than the person who loves them might not love them anymore.

Do Now: begin a journal entry with I have been infatuated with... and the reason why.

I have been infatuated by the personality of the bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan.

Interpretive: Please cite sources/find text support for your answers.

Why does Lord Henry feels there is a class conflict between Dorian and Sibyl?

She's not a well known actress. Dorian is more wealthy then her. She is so much beneath him.

How can we compare and contrast both Sibyl and Dorian to Shakespeare's Juliet and Romeo?
"I represent to you all the sins you have never had the courage to commit" (Lord Henry)

He has no remorse for anyone else. All of the evil things that Dorian did not do he will do it himself.

Literary Device/techniques:How is Dorian's feelings about Sibyl ironic?

He feels that when she touches him he forgets everything else. He wants to place her on a pedestal of gold and wants the world to worship her.

How is the physical description of Sibyl a foreshadowing of her bad performance?

White lily represents death. Cool ivory is bad acting.

What allusions are referenced/cited in these chapters?
Comprehension:

How Does Dorian describes Sibyl's acting?

He said that it was really bad and horrible. He was embarassed. He says that he was horriblly dissapointed.

Connect: How is Aestheticism and Decadence evident in Chapter six?

Aestheticism: the acceptance of artistic beauty and taste as a fundamental standard, ethical and other standards being secondary. Decadence in this chapter is when Dorian is ashamed because of the bad performance of Sibyl.

Decadence: The act or process of falling into an inferior condition or state; deterioration; decay

Homosexuality: sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one's own sex.

Critical Thinking:

How is Sibyl's acting like bad art?

Sibyls acting is like bad art because she did nothing an artist is really known for doing. Basically she had disgraced art infront of Dorian.

Is Dorian truly in love with Sibyl or is he simply infatuated with her and WHY?

I think that he is infatuated with her acting of Juliet. I don't think that he really loves Sibyl for who she really is. He is in love with her acting.
