Do Now 11/20/08




Objective: Students will analyze text and describe the characters in Chapters 1 and 2. Students will conduct online research of mythological Greek figures, then synthesize the information by connecting it to character(s) in the text.

Lord Henry Wotton:
How is he a manipulator and an initiator?

He is a maipulator because he tries to talk Dorian into doing something. Also he is a initiator because he tries to chnange everones prespectives into his own.


What kind of cigarettes does he smoke?
Heavy opium- tainted cigarette.

How is he cynical?
He believes that beauty is what keeps a person alive. A person is nothing without beauty.

Basil Hallward: Cite his reaction to his painting of Dorian Gray?
He didn't want to send the painting away because he had too much of himself in it. Page 2 1st paragraph, " I don't think I shall send it anywhere." Also in line paragraph 5 page 2, "There is too much of myself in the thing, Harry,—too much of myself!"

How has he violated the code of an artist according to Wilde's preface?
He put too much of himself into the painting.

He obviously sees in Dorian absolute beauty and harmony.
“interested in his personality.” first chapter and page 6.
Dorians personality had stirred him.

What is the main conflict in this paragraph?
The main conflict is that Basil doesn't want to sell the painting because it has too much of himself in it. However Hemry wanted him to sell it. So they were arguing about that.

Lord Henry is trying to explain or to to say trying to talk Dorian into not liking Sibyl. e is rying to put a bad influence on women. I think that later on Dorian will actually fall for Lord Henry's trick and lose Sibyl.
