Eulogy Of Sibyl

“The diamond in the ruff that has never been found”

"Mournfully and low the man of God began his eulogy of the dead, and his doleful voice, mingled with the sobbing which it was its purpose to stimulate and sustain, rose and fell, seemed to come and go, like the sound of a sullen sea" a quote written by Bierce, Ambrose. My one and only daughter Sibyl Vane bloomed in this world on March 10, 1873. To me she was the most precious little flower in the world. All my life I had worked hard for the best for Sibyl. I myself had educated my angel at home. Days went by so fast that Sibyl grew up as a young actress. All she knew was acting and nothing was more precious to her but her acting. She performed on stage right here in London… her home. During her very short life… my precious child had done many things. The major one she ever did was falling in love. Yes… Sibyl Vane fell in love with Dorian Gray an audience whom she only performed for after falling in love. Everyday she would tell me about her love to Dorian Gray and how happy she really was being in love with him. One day I remember her coming in my room and saying… “Mother, mother, I am so happy!”… “and you must be happy too!” Sibyl met Dorian for the first time back stage. She always bragged about how much he loves her acting. I do remember one day when she came home with a sad face. She looked really depressed. I asked her about her performance that day and she replied in such a rude manner.

Sibyl was rejected by her lover. Dorian Gray was a profanation to her that day. He put her down and said that her performance was a complete fiasco. From that day I think that Sibyl found everything to be an illusion around her. The heart breaking news about Sibyl’s death revealed that she my one and only daughter had committed suicide. She ate something very poisonous. Oh how much I miss that child. She was a very proficient person. Sibyl had a great talent that was never revealed to anyone. Sibyl was a diamond in the ruff that has never been found. The people that she had hung around never looked at her in a way of interest. They always let her stand around them because of her young beauty. They never noticed her best qualities that made her exist to me. When she was little, she used to dance around the living room like the performers she had seen on television. She would sing many songs, emulating her favorite singer. Oh how ironic, I could just see her now.

The only difference is that I am actually seeing her now . . . Lying here . . . in this . . . horrible, horrible death bed for no . . . reason at all. She used to talk about how she wanted to be the center of the circle. She immersed herself in every role she played. Her audience’s joys were her joys. Their sorrows were her sorrows. When she acted the background seemed so real. . I wish now I had joined in her happiness in her final days, instead of calling her “Foolish child!” I wish I had listened to her request. “Ah mother, mother, let me be happy”. Even though Sibyl is no longer with us she is still interminable inside of us. I would like to remember her not as someone who has joined the dead but someone who inspired the living.

Objectives: based on chapters 6 and 7 where Dorian tells Lord Henry and Basil about his engagement to Sibyl Vane and he also invites them to see her performance in the theatre in Romeo and Juliet.

Aim: How important is Wilde's credo "Art for Art sake" in Chapter six and What is the difference between Love and infatuation?

Love is a pure feeling one has for someone else where infatuation is when some loves only what the person they love is made up of. What they might not really be from the true inside. They only like the effects on the person they love. This is infutation because if a person came in one day and acted totally different from who they usually are than the person who loves them might not love them anymore.

Do Now: begin a journal entry with I have been infatuated with... and the reason why.

I have been infatuated by the personality of the bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan.

Interpretive: Please cite sources/find text support for your answers.

Why does Lord Henry feels there is a class conflict between Dorian and Sibyl?

She's not a well known actress. Dorian is more wealthy then her. She is so much beneath him.

How can we compare and contrast both Sibyl and Dorian to Shakespeare's Juliet and Romeo?
"I represent to you all the sins you have never had the courage to commit" (Lord Henry)

He has no remorse for anyone else. All of the evil things that Dorian did not do he will do it himself.

Literary Device/techniques:How is Dorian's feelings about Sibyl ironic?

He feels that when she touches him he forgets everything else. He wants to place her on a pedestal of gold and wants the world to worship her.

How is the physical description of Sibyl a foreshadowing of her bad performance?

White lily represents death. Cool ivory is bad acting.

What allusions are referenced/cited in these chapters?
Comprehension:

How Does Dorian describes Sibyl's acting?

He said that it was really bad and horrible. He was embarassed. He says that he was horriblly dissapointed.

Connect: How is Aestheticism and Decadence evident in Chapter six?

Aestheticism: the acceptance of artistic beauty and taste as a fundamental standard, ethical and other standards being secondary. Decadence in this chapter is when Dorian is ashamed because of the bad performance of Sibyl.

Decadence: The act or process of falling into an inferior condition or state; deterioration; decay

Homosexuality: sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one's own sex.

Critical Thinking:

How is Sibyl's acting like bad art?

Sibyls acting is like bad art because she did nothing an artist is really known for doing. Basically she had disgraced art infront of Dorian.

Is Dorian truly in love with Sibyl or is he simply infatuated with her and WHY?

I think that he is infatuated with her acting of Juliet. I don't think that he really loves Sibyl for who she really is. He is in love with her acting.

Do Now: Have you ever had a friend whose girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other who you did not like? Were you envious of their relationship? Did you experience any of the seven deadly sins?

Discussion Questions:Identify members of Sibyl Vane’s family and analyze their interrelationships.Examine the various reactions of Sibyl, Mrs. Vane, and Jim toward Dorian.

that person.

Sibyl Vane’s family:
Mrs. Vane: Sibyl's mother. She is happy when Sybyl is happy.
James Vane: Sibyl's large and brach brother. He is really protective.

Critical Response: Examine the universality of the statement, “Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.”

I think that this quote means that when children are young they know that they have support from their parents and follow the steps of their parents. However, when they start to grow up they start getting different prespectives of life. They want to make their own descions and tend to not listen to there parents anymore. Then they start juding there parents saying what they believe is different then what the parent believes.

Lord Henry and Victoria are divorced. They don't really like eachother. Lord Henry also does not seem to like women in this book after the divorce. How has he violated the code of an artist according to Wilde's preface?
He put too much of himself into the painting.

He obviously sees in Dorian absolute beauty and harmony.
“interested in his personality.” first chapter and page 6.
Dorians personality had stirred him.

What is the main conflict in this paragraph?
The main conflict is that Basil doesn't want to sell the painting because it has too much of himself in it. However Hemry wanted him to sell it. So they were arguing about that.

Free write on Prediction: What will be Lord Henry's influence on Dorian Gray?

Lord Henry is trying to explain or to to say trying to talk Dorian into not liking Sibyl. e is rying to put a bad influence on women. I think that later on Dorian will actually fall for Lord Henry's trick and lose Sibyl.

Do Now 11-19-08

Objective: Students would read Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray preface and focus on Wilde's view of art.

Aim: What is Wilde's view of "art" in the preface? Why is this a manifesto about the purpose of Art, the role of the artist, and the value of beauty?

Wilde thinks that art is surface and symbol. He says that all art is useless.

How does he define both artist and critic?

He says that the artist is the creator of beautiful things. An artists aim is to reveal and conceal art. He says taht no artist has ethical sympathies. He also says that a critic who finds ugly meanings in beautiful art iscorrupt without being charmed.

What do you think he meant by saying "a book can be moral or immoral?
I think that it means taht a book can teach you right or a wrong lesson.

"Interpret: "Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril." Is this a warning of some kind?
When someone knows that he/she is in danger then that person goes beneath their level. They are willing to be ashamed and lose their reputation.

Interpret: "It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. "
I think that maybe it means that the prespective on the art can change rather than the person changing himself.

Explain whimsical last line: "All art is quite useless."

Aim: What are the various themes that we can apply to shakespeare's Othelloand what settings do you think are appropriate to represent the settings in your act?
Do Now: Write a paragraph on what you think is an appropriate theme for Shakespeare's Othello
Mini Lesson: Recall the literary term

The appropriate theme for Othello is (True love is trustworthy.)

A work's theme is its main, controlling idea: its central insight or understanding about life. The theme of a literary work my be implied or stated.
Tips for Stating the Theme of a Literary Work
Express the theme as a complete statement, not a word or phrase.
The theme should be a generalization, but not too broad or specific. Be sure your statement is supported by setting, tone, plot, and symbolism.
Avoid words like always, never, all, or none.
Do not express the theme as a cliché or moral, unless the story is designed to be instructive.

Cooperative Learning:
Select one of the following themes and in another paragraph or two state why your selection best fits this play:
The major themes of Othello are:

  1. appearance and reality,
  2. society's treatment of the outsider; and
  3. jealousy

I choose theme 3 jealousy. This theme relates to Othello in various ways. One character in this play named Iago faces jealousy in almost the whole play. Iago is a solider that follows the commands of Othello. However another soldier named Michael Cassio was at a higher position in being a soldier. Iago tried many evil plans into getting rid of Cassio because he wanted to be at a higher position.
One evil plan that Iago used against Cassio is getting him drunk and telling Roderigo to fight with him so that Othello will become angry with him and also this will hurt Cassio's reputation. This part is present in Act II, Scene I. Roderigo also faces jealousy in Othello. He is jealous of Othello. Roderigo is a secrete lover of Desdemona. He wants to marry Desdemona.

Will Smith (Othello)

WILL SMITH

I think that Will Smith should play the role of Othello. Othello has a very strong character as well as Smith. The nature of Othello's character is of a dark man and Will Smith is also the same.

Do Now Sept, 18, 2008

Aim: How to create a blog page?

Do Now: Assignment of Laptops
Work on Creating and completing blog pages.

Do Now Sept 17, 2008

Do Now: Recall Shakespeare’s poems above and write a brief commentary on the portrayal of women in the Renaissance. You can look at the images and think about whether they seem idealized or realistic.

I think that the woman look realistic, they may have natural beauty.

How does the portrayal of women in the paintings of the period compare with the portrayal of women today such as Tyra Banks, Lindsay Lohan, Queen Latifah, Jesse Randhawa, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Seymour?

The flaws are hidden by makeup and so on. The people in the portrayals do not want their flaws to show, so they try to look as perfect as they can.

DoNow Sept 16, 2008

Aim: How is the Shakespearean Sonnet different from the Petrarchan Sonnet

Do Now: How would you describe your approach to romance when compared to your friends?
Teacher Read Aloud: Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnet 43

Compared to my friends I think that I may be more romantic than them. I am more soft spoken and quite while they talk.

Comprehension Check:

What question does the speaker of “Sonnet 43” prose and answer?
"How do I love thee."

What is your impression of the romantic relationship described in this sonnet?
I think that the author loves whom he's referring to however she is and every part of her life.

Do you think it is desirable to love or be loved in this way?
I think it's desired to be loved this way, because every one wants to be loved this way.

Literary Analysis:

What symbols are evident in this poem?
Line 1 "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways."

Critical thinking:

Do you think it is wrong to love some so intensely?
No it all depends on the person and how he or she wants to love in which ever way. It's never wrong to do so.

Do Now: Sept. 11-15

Aim: Renaissance sonnets often focus on the great beauty of the beloved. How important is physical beauty or attractiveness in today’s society?

Do Now: What do you think makes you beautiful?
Procedures:

I think how I use my personality is what makes me beautiful in this society. My personality makes me what I really am.

Teacher Read Aloud: Sonnet 130

Write a brief paragraph on what you think is the meaning of the poem.
In this sonnet the poet is describing the many beautiful features of a mistress. He compares her to many things. he thinks that his beloved is as special as any woman.

Think about two questions that you would like to discuss about this poem and write it in your journal/notebook.

Question:
1- In the beginning of the poem is the author trying to say that the things he's comparing his beloved with are better than her?

2- In line 1"My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" , is the author trying to say that the mistresses eyes are better than the sun or the sun is much better?

Comprehension check:

Is the speaker’s mistress dark or fair?
Fair, like a tan color.

Do the flaws pointed out by the speaker affect his love for the woman described?
No he loves her no matter what or how she is. she is more beautiful to him then any other woman.

Think Critically:
What do you think is the speaker’s attitude toward the woman he loves?
He's is very happy to love her, which is why he's describing the many features of her and comparing her to many things.

Think about: his descriptions of her physical characteristics, his descriptions of her voice, his conclusion in the couplet.

What do you think might have been Shakespeare’s purpose in writing this sonnet?
he wants to tell the reader that he is describing her true features unlike any other poet had, how she's more beautiful than any other woman that is being described as all lies by other poets.

Does this poem present a realistic or idealized portrait of the beloved?
This sounds like a realistic portrait of the beloved, because he probably experienced something like that in his life time.

Do Now Sept.10

Aim: How can Shakespeare’s sonnet 116 relates to our personal lives?

Do Now: Write about a time when a best friend’s personal flaws got in the way of your friendship. Or, have you ever stopped seeing/loving someone (friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, family, etc.) because of a personal flaw?

One flaw that got in the way of me and my friend is when one of my friends kept talking about herself and keep saying that she's the best at everything. She got on my nerve's and that caused a flaw between us two.

Teacher Read Aloud: Sonnet 116

Write a brief paragraph on what you think is the meaning of the poem.
I think that this poem is about how true love is love that never for any cause breaks or else its no longer a true love.

Think about two questions that you would like to discuss about this poem and write it in your journal/notebook.

Question:
1- Why does the author mention in line 2 that "love is not love."?
2- What does line 13 imply about love?

Cooperative Learning:
Thematic: What is the overall Theme of this sonnet? Cite supporting lines from the sonnet
(There is no true love form line 2), (Admit impediments. Love is not love.)

Literary Analysis: Look carefully at lines 5-8 notice any metaphors?
(It is the star to every wand'ring bark,) line 7

Think About: What kind of person might the speaker be? The likely age of such a person. The experiences that such a person might have had.
He probably has experienced love in his life. Basically he is an experienced person for the fact that he knows so much about true love.

Do you think the speaker’s concept of love is realistic? Why or Why not?
Yes because it goes on in the society all around us or may be is is also experienced about true love.

Connect: What is the ONE flaw that could turn you away from a person? What do you think you can do to overlook this flaw (if you are willing)?
one flaw is when people don't know how to give and take space for themselves. One way to cure this flaw is of course to give and ask for space and live happily ever after.
